Additional Instructions for First-Time Users:

May we suggest you start by selecting a favorite food or any food product in your kitchen. Now that you have the item in your hand, enter the name on the label or how you would normally refer to it, for example: "Almond Joy" or "Almond Joy chocolate bar." You can easily change this name later (even days later), if you decide you used the wrong name or made a spelling error. The database can list the food item under more than one name. Why would we want to let you do that? Because this site is easy to use and easy to find what you are looking for. If an item is referred to by user two different ways, then we should include both in our database.

Next you will want to use the brand name that is on the label, for example: "Mars Corporation."

The General Food Category is based on the grocery store isle name where you would likely find the food item. It is a good idea this point that you look at the descriptions above and decide whether another person would know exactly what food product you are talking about.

When the button at the bottom of a page says "Continue" you will not be posting the item yet. So click it with confidence. In two clicks you will be on a page that will identify food items that are potential matches to the food item you are trying to enter. That's how we avoid adding duplicate food items. At that point you will be able to edit the food item, if it is already there. You can even use the browser back arrow to fix items on many pages before posting them. However, once you click a button that says, "Post, Add, or Finish" you will have to go into the edit mode to change something. It is easier to edit a food item than add a new one. Entering the item is not hard, once you get the hang of it. Thanks.
